Miami-Dade County Public School Teachers to Learn a Globally Popular Sport Netball
Miami, FL, January 25, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Netball America announced today it will lead the Miami-Dade County Public School Teachers Professional Development Day on Friday February 1 from 9am to 3pm at Miami Sunset Senior High School, 13125 SW 72nd St, Miami, Florida. 350 middle and high school teachers from Miami-Dade have been invited to this event.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the United States, comprised of 392 schools, 345,000 students and over 40,000 employees. Located at the southern end of the Florida peninsula, the school district stretches over 2,000 square miles of diverse and vibrant communities ranging from rural and suburban to urban cities and municipalities. A truly global community, district students speak 56 different languages and represent 160 countries.
Netball is a recognized Olympic sport currently played in over 70 countries and enjoyed by more than 20 million people.
It is a fast, non-contact game based on the principles of basketball except there is no backboard, no dribbling and players have just 3 seconds in which to pass the ball. It is truly a team sport as individual players can't dominate the game as players are restricted to zones and the ball must be touched in each zone.
Given the global diversity of students, Netball is an ideal sport to introduce to teachers and students. It is a great attraction for students to know the sport they played in their home country is now available to them at their school in Miami. Teachers are looking for new and cost effective physical activity programs and Netball is it.
The sessions will be led by Netball America Coach, Jordan Keen, who is also vice-captain of collegiate Team USA Netball. Jordan suffered from a ski fall when she was 12, which caused an onset of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and caused her to be dependent on a wheelchair for the next 5 years. Jordan will be sharing with the teachers her inspirational story on how Netball helped her during her recovery and gave her confidence and leadership abilities.
"I am excited to have Netball America present to my teachers. As District Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy for Miami-Dade County Public Schools I can see the benefits Netball will bring to my education curriculum," said Dr. Jayne Greenberg.
“We are honored to partner with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Netball America's unique programs provide opportunities for youth of all skills and abilities to participate in physical activity,” said Sonya Ottaway, President, Netball America.
