The Pixel Trade: Live, Work, Create, and Barter

Brooklyn Industries Trades Pixels for a Brooklyn Experience.

Brooklyn, NY, January 31, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Brooklyn Industries, a company founded by two artists, is no stranger to collaborating with creative minds from around the world. When they first heard of a young man from Australia traveling the globe by bartering photography services for food, board, and transportation, working together was a natural fit in keeping with the company’s own motto, “Live, Work, Create.”

Shantanu Starick created The Pixel Trade project and started trading photography services for travel in 2011. Starick agrees to photograph any subject, and in return clients provide the necessities for his stay. His trade subjects refer him to other trades in order for his project to continue. The Pixel Trade has taken Starick to the headquarters of notable clients like Tumblr, Vimeo, and chef Sara Jenkin’s critically acclaimed restaurant Porsena.

For Starick the project has helped him realize “what you ‘need’ compared to what you ‘want.’” Furthermore, removing the monetary element “changes the whole work dynamic where everyone involved is relaxed and not concerned with their watches.” For Starick, this makes working with clients “more like working with friends” where traditionally restrictions of budget and production might have hurried a shoot to simply wrap up, or not happen at all.

In December 2012, Brooklyn Industries approached Starick while he was still in New York City before the Christmas holiday. In exchange for Starick’s photography services, Brooklyn Industries put one of their winter coats on his back, offered a lazy day with two of their designers in Williamsburg, a tour of the company’s design studio in DUMBO, and took him in as one of their own with an invitation to the Brooklyn Industries’ holiday party and three course dinner at the founders’ apartment down the street.

The results of Starick’s documentary of the Brooklyn Industries team can be found online. http://brooklynindustries.tumblr.com/post/41783099885/the-pixel-trade-live-work-create-and-barter

The Brooklyn Industries team was so satisfied with the experience of working with Starick and the quality of his photography that he has agreed to a second trade for Brooklyn Industries’ Fall collection campaign photography, due out July 2013. Brooklyn Industries is very excited to be a part of The Pixel Trade’s ongoing project.
