About Patricia Saunders Nixon
Dr. Nixon has over 34 years experience in the music education field. She has been an Assistant Professor of Music/ Vocal Instructor at Norfolk State University since 2002, specializing in voice, piano, sight singing/ear training and music appreciation. Dr. Nixon previously taught music for 22 years at the Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind and Multi-Disabled in Hampton, Virginia from 1978 to 2000. She was a Choral Director for the Norview Middle School of Norfolk and later at Wilson High School of Portsmouth. She reestablished the Vocal Jazz Ensemble at Norfolk State University in 2002 and served as its Director from 2003 to 2010. Since 2010 she has been the Director and teacher of the Jr. Music/Summer Music Clinic. Dr. Nixon is affiliated with the National Association of Negro Musicians, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and is an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. Born on November 22, 1955 in Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Nixon obtained a B.S. in Music Education in 1978, a M.M. in Vocal Performance in 1988, both from Norfolk State University and a D.M.A. in Vocal Performance from Shenandoah University Conservatory. Singing the role of Clara in Porgy & Bess was a career highlight. She is married to Jimmie L. Nixon and enjoys photography and crafts in her spare time.
