Orange County Private School to Hold Kid-Friendly Civil War Re-Enactment
St. Catherine’s civil war re-enactment is unique due to its emphasis on children and education through living history. First, St. Catherine’s re-enacts a battle that involved children. The New Market Skirmish is about cadets from the Virginia Military Institute who fought alongside actual Civil War units.
Anaheim, CA, February 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- St. Catherine’s Academy will host its 15th Annual Civil War Educational Weekend on March 16 & March 17, 2013 at the school’s campus (215 N. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim). Over 200 professional re-enactors will stage famous battles and recreate life during the Civil War on the campus of the Orange County private school. Attendees will also have the chance to tour Confederate and Union encampments, visit the Sutler’s marketplace, taste “hardtack,” and hear President Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg Address.
What makes this re-enactment special?
St. Catherine’s civil war re-enactment is unique due to its emphasis on children and education through living history. “Our goal is get kids interested in history by providing an interactive experience they can relate to,” says St. Catherine’s advancement director Joanna Ronan. How do they do this?
First, St. Catherine’s re-enacts a battle that involved children. The New Market Skirmish is about cadets from the Virginia Military Institute who fought alongside actual Civil War units. Once students know they are watching a battle about kids, they can relate. It really grabs their attention.
Secondly, St. Catherine’s provides a historical scavenger hunt called the Trivia Challenge. In order to complete the Trivia Challenge, students must ask the different units of re-enactors about their experiences during the Civil War. Students may ask a soldier about his uniform, watch a civilian prepare a campfire lunch, or learn to spin wool. One year a re-enactor even taught students about baseball during the Civil War. Units change from year-to-year so the Trivia Challenge is new each year.
Finally, because this re-enactment is all about education, St. Catherine’s provides a variety of educational resources on its website. A volunteer re-enactor even visits local schools and children’s groups to give a free presentation about the New Market Skirmish with the aim of helping students better understand the re-enactment.
Students from all over southern California, as well as the general public, are invited to attend the event.
