Charleston, SC, February 13, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina taught a class on the fundamentals of estate planning and probate at the St. Andrews Regional Library located in West Ashley in Charleston SC on Tuesday November 13, 2012. The class was free of charge and open to the public and covered the basics of planning an estate and navigating the probate court system. This was the second time that Mr. Guthrie has taught a class at the St. Andrews library branch. St. Andrews Regional Library is part of the Charleston County Library System and provides many educational programs designed to teach the community about important issues.
Attorney Evan Guthrie spoke on many estate planning topics including what an estate actually is, what are the two main categories of assets one can own, the most common types of plans for estates, what happens when a person dies with no plan in place, what a last will and testament can and cannot do for someone, what a revocable living trust is and the advantages and disadvantages are in setting one up, how a durable power of attorney can protect a person and their family in case of incapacity, how advance healthcare directives help take difficult end of life decisions out of the hands of a family member, the most common mistakes that people make when planning an estate, and a list of all the important papers and documents that one should have in order and in one findable place to make things easier on those left behind. Those in attendance had questions that included the average price of a basic estate plan, how often someone should update their estate plan, and what happens when someone dies who has minor children and ways to choose a guardian. Mr. Guthrie enjoyed being able to give back to the community by teaching classes on issues that impact families for multiple generations.
