Bayer MaterialScience’s Materials Help Bring Life-Saving Medical Devices to Market
Anaheim, CA, February 13, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Medical technology continues to advance by leaps and bounds. But bringing life-saving products to market requires more than medical breakthroughs: it also requires materials that can meet the rigorous challenges these applications demand. Bayer MaterialScience LLC offers grades of polycarbonate resins and blends formulated specifically to meet the unique requirements of the medical industry.
Bayer will highlight its portfolio of plastics and the applications these materials help bring to life at MD&M West – the world's largest medical device design and manufacturing event. Here’s a preview.
Bayer will unveil a new, medical-grade polycarbonate during the event. Makrolon® Rx2440 plastic possesses optimal flow properties and achieves faster recovery time in color shift from sterilization to part usage. This material is well suited to a variety of applications, including IV access, respiratory, surgical and renal care.
Also on display will be EntreVu® EX, a clear arthroscopic access cannula body designed by Cannuflow to help with fluid management during arthroscopic surgery. Bayer’s Makrolon Rx1452 polycarbonate was Cannuflow’s material of choice due to its moldability and biocompatibility. Also important was clarity, which helps the surgeon more easily see surgical knots.
Another medical application utilizing Bayer’s Makrolon resin is Infusion Innovations Inc.’s (I3) Q-FLO™ valve connector. According to the manufacturer, the Q-FLO connector offers improved safety and convenience for healthcare workers administering cytotoxic drugs to patients. The application required a reliable material meeting U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements along with a proven safety and functional profile.
Cardiac Science Corporation also needed a safe and reliable material for its product. The company selected Bayblend® FR3010 polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) blend resin for its Powerheart® G5 automated external defibrillator (AED) device. Specific colors for the device were chosen from Bayer’s LEDA® compounded color technology palette.
Attendees of MD&M West are invited to stop by Bayer booth #2021 to see firsthand these and other applications, and to learn more about the company’s broad range of proven materials for the medical and health care industry.
