Perot Museum Guests Show Love for Sports Run Exhibit; Dallas Agency 900lbs of Creative Plays Key Role in "Crowd Favorite"
Sports Run Exhibit and Projection Mapping designed by 900lbs of Creative brings additional cool factor to Perot Museum of Nature and Science.
Dallas, TX, February 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Perot Museum of Nature and Science’s Sports Run Exhibit has repeatedly been named a “must see” since the museum’s opening in December. The agency behind designing the content for the exhibit, Dallas-based 900lbs of Creative, collaborated with the Perot Museum and the Science Museum of Minnesota for designing the content of the exhibit, located in the museum’s fun-filled Sports Hall.
The 55-foot long interactive exhibit challenges kids and adults alike to try and outrun a 3D life-size Tyrannosaurus rex, Felix Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, Emily Richardson, a WOGA Level 10 gymnast or a 3D life-size cheetah. The Perot Museum also asked 900lbs to create a 150-foot by 100-foot custom animation, known as projection mapping, for the museum’s opening fundraising gala.
“900lbs brings amazing creativity and talent to the table and we are thrilled with the results of both the Sports Run Exhibit and the Projection Mapping,” said Nicole G. Small, Eugene McDermott CEO, Perot Museum of Nature and Science. “The goal of our museum is to inspire minds through learning and we use interactive technology to do that. Racing a Tyrannosaurus rex or a cheetah teaches kids about science while having fun at the same time.”
Filming the live action athletes required a challenging setup of 12 HD cameras, 72 feet of green screen and a diverse crew of 22 technicians, electricians and creatives. The Tyrannosaurus rex was modeled and textured from the Jurassic Park maquette the museum has on site, while the Cheetah was modeled from research, photography and many discussions with the museum's curators. A video of the Sports Run exhibit is available to the public here: https://vimeo.com/56156624.
"Since we opened the new building on December 1, it is clear this exhibit is the crowd favorite,” said Dan Kohl, Vice President for Creativity and Innovation, Perot Museum of Nature and Science. “There are always people lined up to run against our virtual athlete. Even classroom groups are cheering as their teachers take their turn at competing!"
Since 900lbs creates unique experiences, working on this new extraordinary institution is something they are not taking lightly.
"This is a truly unique opportunity to be a part of the development of the Perot Museum,” said Steve Deitz, 900lbs president and co-founder. “It's an amazing place and such an important new addition to the city of Dallas. It was a solid team effort with our artists employing their many strengths throughout the project."
900lbs co-founder and creative guru Josh Bray said it’s not everyday you get to work on a project that lets kids race Dallas Cowboy Felix Jones.
"When does one get a chance to race an NFL player or a Tyrannosaurus rex? The Sports Run Exhibit is a great place for kids and adults to test their speed while providing a one-of-a-kind interactive experience," said Bray.
For the projection mapping, 900lbs created a visual story, which was projected using four HD Barco projectors on the museum's distinctive exterior as guests arrived at the fundraiser event in November. The animation used bold colors and illustrations inspired by the geometric shapes of the building to artistically represent the 11 halls of the museum. For each hall, the 900lbs team conceptualized a story inside of a diorama box that looked as if it was in the museum.
Projection mapping is the process of effectively animating stationary objects, such as a building, with moving imagery projected onto its surface. Taking into account the various angles and exterior elements of structures, projection mapping creates a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience for the audience. A video of the projection mapping can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/54332403.
900lbs worked with other Dallas-based technology studios on the projects, including the Science Museum of Minnesota, Delcom Group, BenQ and Scalable Displays, the technical partners for the Sports Running exhibit; and Alford Media, Moving Image Technologies and Barco for the projection mapping.
