Shea Properties Announces Opening of Northgate González Market in San Diego’s Historic Barrio Logan Neighborhood
Five New Tenants Also Announced.
San Diego, CA, February 20, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Northgate González Market has opened its doors to the public, marking another milestone in a decades-long effort to infuse San Diego’s historic Barrio Logan neighborhood with a modern mix of retail services, housing and community amenities.
Developed by Aliso Viejo, California-based Shea Properties, the new 35,891-square-foot market – part of a chain of popular Hispanic-oriented markets based in Anaheim – anchors Mercado del Barrio, a retail and housing development that was 20 years in the making.
“The opening of Northgate González Market fulfills a vision to provide the residents of this unique community with a supermarket that truly serves their needs,” said Kevin McCook, vice president of development and acquisitions for Shea Properties. Noting that crowds exceeded expectations on opening day, McCook said, “The response to the new store has been remarkable, and Shea Properties is proud to be a part of Barrio Logan’s exciting emergence as a trendsetting community.”
Several other retail tenants have also recently announced their plans to open at Mercado del Barrio, including Tocumbo Ice Cream, Hispanic Professional Services, T-Mobile, Little Caesar’s Pizza, and Free Dry Lavanderia, with others to be announced shortly. Shea Properties is the developer of the community’s new retail component. In addition to the standalone building that houses Northgate González Market, the project includes a second retail building with 13,221 square feet of retail and restaurant space; located at the corner of Main and Cesar Chavez, the building is just across from a planned new community college. Another building on the corner of National and Cesar Chavez houses 35,515 square feet of street-level retail with 92 affordable apartment units built on the upper levels—all of which are currently leased.
The development was designed by award-winning Safdie Rabines Architects of San Diego and incorporates public art by famous local artists and a community plaza complete with a stage for performances and events, and a pop-jet fountain for the kids.
Mercado del Barrio is located under the picturesque Coronado Bay Bridge in the heart of Barrio Logan at the eastern edge of downtown San Diego. Adjacent to the historic Chicano Park, the mixed-use site is one block south of Interstate 5 and one block north of a San Diego trolley stop. PETCO Park, the Convention Center, the city’s historic Gaslamp Quarter and the rest of scenic downtown San Diego are just minutes away.
In May 2011, The California Chapter of the American Planning Association, San Diego Selection, chose Mercado del Barrio for a first-place Neighborhood Planning Award. Chapter officials cited Shea’s successful efforts to create a “neighborhood plan that demonstrates innovative planning principles and measures that create sustainable neighborhoods with lasting value.”
