Dr. Hoekenga has 34 years experience teaching in the medical field. He is President of Cardiac Specialists of New Mexico, Vice President of Bridgestar Inc. and Director of Recovery Services of New Mexico. Dr. Hoekenga is a Designated Disability Physician, addictionologist, a reviewer for Internet Review of Books and an author. Currently, he focuses his time on writing about cardiology and historical fiction about Tudor England and modern Northern New Mexico. He obtained an A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1965, a M.D. from Wayne State University in 1971 and did his Internship/Residency/Cardiology Fellowship at the University of New Mexico in 1978. Dr. Hoekenga served as Vice Chairman with the Department of Cardiology at the University of New Mexico until 1988 and was Chief of Cardiology at the V.A. Medical Center in Albuquerque from 1981-1988. He had his own private practice in Las Cruces until 2006. He originated the cardiac catheterization lab in Las Cruces and served as Associate Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Hoekenga was awarded America’s Top Cardiologist in 2012. He has published 39 scientific abstracts, 24 articles, 3 book chapters, 320 lectures and 5 fiction books. He is affiliated with the F.A.C.C., F.A.H.A., F.A.C.P., and is a Designated Doctor with the A.A.D.E.P. Dr. Hoekenga was born on March 23, 1942 in Michigan and has six children.
