Margaret River, Australia, February 28, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Newly crowned world champions Stephanie Gilmore and Joel Parkinson are set to headline an implausible line-up of the world's best surfing talent at the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro 2013. It is thought to be the first time that both the female and male ASP World Champions will compete at the world famous Surfers Point together.
Event organisers are holding an open spot for 11-times ASP world champion Kelly Slater.
95 of the world's 100 top-ranked male surfers and the top 18 ranked women competitors will showcase their talents at Surfers Point break on March 16-24.
The strength of this year's Drug Aware Pro is a direct outcome of the decision taken by the Association of Surfing Professionals last November to approve a daring bid by the State Government and Surfing WA to upgrade the event to a World Championship Tour contest, automatically drawing the world's top 18 ranked female competitors from 2013 and the world's top 32 male surfers, starting from next year.
To provide further boost to WA's premium surf event, Hawaiian John John Florence and his fellow countryman Courtney Conlogue will return to defend their Margaret River titles.
Gilmore, five-time champion on the Women's ASP World Tour, was recently inducted into Surfing Australia’s Hall of Fame.
Mark Richards, who was recently named Australia's most influential surfer of the last 50 years, will make a special appearance at the Pro.
