SafetySkills® Announces Confined Space and Engulfment Awareness for Oil and Gas Operations as the Free Online Safety Training Course for the Month of March

This month's free featured course is Confined Space and Engulfment Awareness for Oil and Gas Operations. A confined space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit, and it is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program, fatal injuries in confined spaces fluctuated from a low of 81 in 1998 to a high of 100 in 2000. During the five-year period, there was an average of 92 fatalities per year. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, underground vaults, tanks, storage bins, manholes, pits, silos, process vessels, and pipelines. Upon completion of this learning event, the Learner will be able to identify the major hazards associated with working in and around confined spaces, and recognize methods to minimize or eliminate those hazards. Even normally habitable parts of a building such as corridors or offices can have characteristics of a confined space, during operations that alter normal ventilation and access. A room that is wrapped in plastic sheeting for painting and any vapor emitted in the room may not be dispersed by blocked ventilation ducts is a good example of this. In the U.S., entry into permit-required confined spaces must comply with regulations promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These regulations include developing a written program, issuing entry permits, assigning attendant(s), designating entrants, and ensuring a means of rescue. This course covers a wide range of confined space awareness requirements that include sections 1910.146(b), 1910.146(c)(2), 1910.146(c)(3), 1910.146(c)(5)(ii), 1910.146(d)(3), 1910.146(d)(5)(i), 1910.146(e), 1910.146(h), 1910.146(i), and 1910.146(j). However, the training requirements state that employees should have hands-on skill training with the instruments they will be required to use.
