The Truth of the Matter: Succeeding While Black Published by Outskirts Press

Author and Army veteran Matt Drayton turns the phrase “while black” on its head as he shows that education, community and hard work are more important than bling, cell phones and tennis shoes.

Spring Lake, NC, March 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Author and retired Sergeant Major Matt Drayton announced today the release of Succeeding While Black, A Blueprint for Success, published by Outskirts Press. The decorated veteran helps young African-Americans understand the reality of their situation so that they can begin to flourish in life and not have to struggle throughout their entire existence.

“As an African-American you will live by a different set of rules, you will be judged by a different set of standards and you will have to fight and work harder than others for everything you get. That’s just the way it is,” writes author Drayton.

He knows. Raised by a sometimes alcoholic father after his mother died too young, Drayton grew up on the back streets of Savannah, Georgia, in the early seventies learning how to fight, win at dice games in the alleys and earn money running errands for back street whiskey joints. Lying, stealing and vandalizing property were the skills he learned then to survive and to be respected by his peers.

With the help of an inspirational high school coach, a few good teachers and some caring friends, Drayton then learned about pride, education, community and hard work. He went on to join the Army and reach the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major before retiring, starting his own company and becoming a corporate speaker, consultant and leadership expert.

In Succeeding While Black Drayton passes on his hard won lessons – both the good ones and the bad – and with genuine concern he encourages today’s African-American youth to look clearly at both the reality of their circumstance and the efforts that will be needed for them to succeed -- just as Drayton did, the old fashioned way, through discipline and hard work.
