1.5 Million Homes in England do Not Have Smoke Detectors
The amount of people who do not have smoke detectors is worrying as they are simple to install and easy to maintain.
Kent, United Kingdom, March 28, 2013 --(PR.com)-- It is obvious how important smoke detectors are in the home, especially when they can save the lives of your family and yourself. They are inexpensive so everyone should have them installed in their homes. However this is not the case as there are over a million homes in England who do not have a smoke detector installed.
A poll by the Local Government Association (LGA) revealed these figures, which equates to 7 per cent of the population in England. Fire and rescue services are insisting people install a domestic smoke detector in their home as more than one in three fires are in buildings that do not have fire alarms.
It has also been suggested that in homes where alarms are present, people are not checking them and so are not ensuring they work properly. Domestic smoke detectors should be checked weekly, however results show that only one in eight test their alarms weekly.
Results from the poll also found that 12 per cent of people test their alarm every week, 52 per cent check it less than once per month or not at all and 7 per cent do not have a working smoke detector, with one per cent stating they did not know.
The poll also showed that people aged between 18 and 24 were less likely than older people to say they do not have a working alarm in their home.
