Thousands from Around New England to Climb, Run and Crawl on Sandy Westerly Beaches
Westerly, RI, March 27, 2013 --(PR.com)-- BoldrDash, Rhode Island’s only 5k, military-style obstacle course, will be hosting a new event on May 18 and 19, 2013 at Westerly Town Beaches and Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, RI. The two-day event, a challenging, daring and fun 5k obstacle course in the sand, is being held to help "Bring Back the Beach,” a non-profit arm of The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce that is working toward the recovery of the Misquamicut Beach community, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
Formed by personal trainer and athlete, Lynn Hall, BoldrDash is a unique physical challenge that is designed for varying fitness abilities. It has been held in September at Yawgoo Valley in Exeter, RI since 2011, attracting participants from RI, MA and CT. In only its third year, BoldrDash has quickly become one of the area’s most anticipated events. The first race attracted 600 participants. Last year, that number doubled to 1200. This year, BoldrDash has added this second race to provide much-needed support to help rebuild the beautiful Westerly beach community. And “BoldrDash For The Beach” already stands to double last year’s number, with more than 3000 racers expected, which would raise $15,000 for the cause.
“BoldrDash is about boldly overcoming limitations with determination. We invite people of all ages and abilities to come out to challenge their bodies and minds in an all-out 5k trek through mud, obstacles, and water,” says founder and president, Lynn Hall.
Designed with over 20 obstacles to challenge the body and mind, BoldrDash participants do not run a mile in between obstacles. Instead they conquer as many obstacles as they would in the average 10-mile mud race, climbing, crawling, sliding, and swinging through all 5 kilometers.
“This is an unbelievably fun and challenging race -- unlike anything you’ve ever experienced,” says Hall. “Yes, it’s grueling and dirty, but at the end of the day, bonds and friendships are formed and smiles all around. Racers are beat and tired but proved to themselves that they can do anything they put their minds to.”
These military-style races have swept the nation as an incredibly popular trend, drawing everyone from athletes to families to face the challenge.
Bringing Back the Beach
Twenty-seven businesses and 3 miles of beach along the Westerly coast were devastated by Hurricane Sandy, severely impacting the lives and jobs of hundreds of Rhode Islanders as well as the state’s economy and tourism industry. The Greater Westerly Chamber Foundation, an arm of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce, is the only local, non-profit 501c(3) organization that is directly supporting volunteer and recovery efforts.Over $170,000 has been raised to date, with monies being used for small business recovery grants, town beach pavilion repairs and lifeguard chairs. “Not only will BoldrDash help us raise much needed funds for our community, the event will help bring people to the beach and raise awareness,” says Lisa Konicki, Executive Director of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce. “We have amazing views and sandy beaches. This gives people a chance to come show their support and reminds us of this precious area that has been wounded, but is still very much here.”
“We can’t wait for this event,” adds Hall. “This will be a whole new experience since we’ll be on sand, which provides natural resistance and its own set of challenges. Let’s face it, we couldn’t ask for better views, even if we’re laying on our backs on the beach from exhaustion.”
