IST Research Tapped to Provide HDT Global with Environmental Engineering Support
Delivering prototype solutions that will deliver autonomous, high fidelity control of the power management system for expeditionary bases.
Fredericksburg, VA, March 29, 2013 --(PR.com)-- IST Research has been selected to provide support to the HDT Expeditionary Systems Group (a division of HDT Global) on the Energy Efficient Combat Outpost (E2COP) project. In keeping with IST Research’s mission statement of delivering decision support innovations to the edge, IST Research will design and develop prototype solutions that will deliver autonomous, high fidelity control of the power management system of the E2COP. Additionally, IST Research will deliver a human-in-the-loop control system that will allow for COP leadership to monitor and control the entire power and environmental systems. To the greatest extent possible, IST Research will utilize open source technology components that will allow for rapid modification, lower cost and a proven technology baseline to begin prototypes. Open source solutions will be investigated for sensors, software and display technology. This technology baseline will then be modified and integrated into the E2COP system.
HDT is well known for its advanced line of expeditionary shelter systems currently used by the military, such as the Base-X® and AirBeam® Shelter systems. As these shelters are typically used in austere and extreme environments, energy efficiency is a critical component of the full shelter system. As such, HDT currently employs a multitude of energy efficient products such as Balance of Systems (BoS) units, Radiant Barrier Blankets, Solar Shade Flys and Self-Powered Heaters along with solar and wind power generation to augment traditional generators to provide the most power efficient shelters available.
Always looking to innovate and set the bar higher, HDT and IST Research will engineer new controls and monitoring devices to further increase the energy efficiency of the shelters without sacrificing the comfort or safety of the troops stationed at these forward deployed bases. Dr. Carl Pates, VP Engineering HDT Expeditionary Systems Group, states, ”This program challenges all the standard paradigms for expeditionary deployment and is focused on minimizing the energy consumption of forward-deployed base camps. IST’s support and experience will provide the end user with unique energy management tools for real-time feedback on energy consumption. HDT’s target goal is 50% energy reduction over current larger base configurations and a “NET ZERO” target for patrol bases at the tip of the spear.”
From the IST Research side, the project will be managed by Principal Engineer, Doug Graham. Doug’s experience as an Electrical Engineer is perfectly suited to provide the next level of environmental efficiency using sensors, RF, PLCs and proprietary Android development.
