The tour, organized by Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH), a North Carolina nonprofit organization committed to documenting and preserving modernist architecture, provides tour participants a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of Chicago’s greatest architectural landmarks.
The weekend-long event includes a roundtrip direct flight on United Airlines from RDU to Chicago O’Hare, as well as accommodations for two nights in the all-suite Comfort Suites, located in downtown Chicago. Full breakfast and free internet will be available at the hotel, and lunch will be provided each day during the tours, as well as a dinner on Saturday night in downtown Chicago. Additionally, attendees will have full photography privileges, indoors and outdoors, at most of the touring sites. Wright, an influential American architect and interior designer, designed more than 1,000 buildings influenced by his philosophy of “organic architecture,” which maintains that a building should develop out of its natural surroundings. His designs for both private and public structures were boldly original as he often rebelled against classic architecture and its traditional ornamentation. He has been credited with initiating many new techniques, such as the use of precast concrete blocks reinforced by steel rods, and he introduced numerous residential innovations, including radiant floor heating. Wright, who has been studied more than any other architect, was recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1991 as the greatest American architect of all time.
