Ambergris Caye Receives Top Honor from TripAdvisor - the Belizean Island Now Ranks First on the Traveler's Choice "Top 10 Islands - World" List
TripAdvisor has introduced a new award category to its burgeoning list of award groups: the “Traveler’s Choice Top 10 Islands – World” category. 2013 will always be remembered as the year in which Ambergris Caye, Belize, gained new levels of prestige and topped this list of best islands, not only in the Caribbean, but in the entire world.
San Pedro, Belize, April 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Every year, TripAdvisor compiles many different categories of awards for the destinations that its users find favorable. Those destinations that get awarded the best in each category carry bragging rights for having dominated for that particular year. With over 500,000 businesses from all over the world listed on TripAdvisor, to be recognized anywhere in the Top 25 on any of their lists is a remarkable feat in itself; to then be recognized as the best in any one category is, needless to say, legendary. This year, TripAdvisor introduced a new award category to its burgeoning list of award groups: the “Traveler’s Choice Top 10 Islands – World” category. 2013 will always be remembered as the year in which Ambergris Caye, Belize, gained something new to add to its legacy by topping this list of best islands, not only in the Caribbean, but in the entire world.
The description on the award from TripAdvisor reads: “Ambergris Caye hovers in a vacation sweet spot: just enough amenities to make it exciting, but not so overdeveloped... A mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island, the largest in Belize, and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads. Reef divers drool over the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole, a 400-foot deep circle of limestone that teems with angelfish, elkhorn coral, cleaner shrimp and stalactites.”
This isn’t the first TripAdvisor distinction that the island has been recipient to; in 2012, San Pedro, the island's only municipality, was ranked among the Top 10 Beach Destinations in Central America; the village was one of three traveler hotspots in Belize that placed on that distinguished list.
Boasting the largest coral reef system in the Western Hemisphere, Ambergris Caye has contended this time around with locations all around the world and beat another Caribbean destination, St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, to top the TripAdvisor “Top 10 Islands – World” survey.
According to TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw, this inaugural list of the world's best islands was based on millions of reviews and ratings on the travel website over the past year.
"Ambergris Caye boasts spectacular caves, winding waterfalls, tropical rainforest and hundreds of limestone caves," said Shaw.
