Challenging Times Ahead for Polish Banks in 2013
Warsaw, Poland, April 20, 2013 --(PR.com)-- “Stagnating revenues will force Poland’s banks to slash operating costs to retain profitability in 2013,” said Marcin Mazurek, director of Inteliace Research, during a presentation of Inteliace’s latest report, Banking Market in Poland, 2013–2015.
The future outlook for the banking sector in Poland is neutral. Key banking volumes are expected to sustain slow growth, while revenues may stagnate and profits are likely to fall in 2013 due to higher operating and risk costs.
Poland’s banking market is facing further consolidation around major players. This process has accelerated significantly in 2012 when Banco Santander merged its subsidiaries, BZ WBK and Kredyt Bank, creating the number-three bank in the market, and when Raiffeisen Bank took over Polbank EFG, advancing to the number-seven position. This process is expected to continue as Nordea Group is actively looking for a buyer of its entire Polish business, and multiple others such as BCP and unnamed French banks are on an earlier stage, considering a market exit. On the buyers’ side, local players such as PKO and GetinNoble are watching closely for any buying opportunity; however, they are also known for taking an opportunistic approach and are looking for bargain prices.
