Job Training for Small Dogs: Port Chester Obedience Training Club Presents Its Newest Class, the Civilized Small Dog
The Civilized Small Dog is a new dog training course offered by Port Chester Obedience Training Club in White Plains, NY starting on May 12, 2013. Registration is open now. Taught by Diane Podolsky, CPDT-KA, CTC, the class is designed to prepare Westchester’s small dogs for summer travel and outdoor dining this spring and summer, meeting the needs of pet parents who love taking their small dogs with them everywhere they go.
White Plains, NY, April 30, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Small dogs have big jobs to do these days. Originally bred to perform work that varies from hunting rats to sitting daintily on the laps of leisure class women, most toy breed dogs now function as cherished companions. It is common for child-free couples to choose a little dog as the object of their affections. Some little dogs are playmates to older children; others fill parents’ empty nests. Many pet parents choose toy breed dogs so they can take them everywhere they go.
One of the most enjoyable activities of the small “doggie lifestyle” is dining out with one’s little dog when the weather is pleasant. Little dog lovers picture themselves dining al fresco at restaurants, cafes and picnics with their tiny canines. Easily portable in carry bags and strollers, well-trained toy breed dogs make delightful dining companions.
The “trick” to making it work is simple: train your dog so he or she is well prepared for a successful outing. Examples of helpful skills for a tiny dog to have are: the ability to remain calm in public, stay near a pet parents’ table without barking or begging for food, sit on a lap without licking a pet parent’s plate or lie relaxing in a dog stroller next to a café table as pedestrians go past.
To prepare Westchester’s small dogs for summer travel and outdoor dining this spring and summer, Port Chester Obedience Training Club has created a new dog training course, aptly titled The Civilized Small Dog.
In this boutique offering, little dogs are trained to lie quietly on a mat while pet parents dine at a table, to ride calmly in a stroller or to enjoy a nap in a carry bag and to ignore food on “Daddy’s” plate when sitting on his lap during an outdoor brunch.
“Of course, these lessons are not learned in a day,” explained Ms. Podolsky, a certified professional dog trainer specializing in training toy breed dogs. “Sometimes the first steps of the training process can bear little resemblance to the goal we have in mind. The amazing and beautiful thing about dog training is that, done well, step by step we build the behavior we want until we achieve the desired behavior performed in the desired context.
“Even after all the years I have been training dogs, it still feels like a small miracle each time a dog turns her nose away from a sandwich!”
