San Diego Center for Family Unity is Growing

The new benchmark center for step-families in San Diego seeks to meet increasing demand with expansion and hiring of bilingual therapist intern.

San Diego, CA, May 04, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Center for Family Unity, a therapy center located in Ruffin Road, San Diego, has hired Miriam Torres, a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern specialized in parenting issues and step-families. This is just the first step in an ambitious expansion plan to meet the current increasing demand of services. The next steps of the plan include hiring more therapists and a significant increase of office space.

Currently, The Center for Family Unity offers couples, children and family counseling as well as customized classes on co-parenting, couples communication, pre-marital courses and parenting teenagers.

"I am really excited about this new phase of The Center for Family Unity. We are becoming the reference center in San Diego for blended (step) families, and in order to fulfill the demand, this expansion is necessary. And this is just the beginning," Kelley Laughery LMFT, founder and president said. "When I founded The Center for Family Unity my dream was to serve the San Diego community helping families in distress, and now, 3 years later, that dream has not only become true, but has exceeded my expectations."

Miriam Torres, a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and a PhD candidate in Expressive Art Therapy, is conducting parenting classes and also counseling children affected by divorce. She has completed training for couples in Emotionally Focused Therapy and has also achieved Level I and II at The Gottman Relationship Institute in Seattle.

Both Laughery and Torres are bilingual (Spanish and English) and their clientele includes Spanish speaking couples and families.

Born in Spain, Miriam Torres moved to the United States in 2007 and since then has completed her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. She has been a parent educator for more than two years and offers parent consultation for behavior management and courses on parenting. She also does premarital counseling and works with traditional as well as alternative and blended families.

"I couldn't be happier to be part of The Center for Family Unity," said Torres. "I've known Kellye for a couple of years, periodically running into each other at different trainings and events, and I always liked her approach to therapy, admired her preparation, and felt identified with many things, like her interest in blended families. So when I finally got the chance to see where she works, I knew I wanted to be part of it. The Center for Family Unity oozes warmth, safety, creativity, playfulness, kindness and inspiration. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work here."

In addition to hiring additional interns and licensed therapist, The Center for Family Unity plans to triple its office space in the coming months.
