Pasadena Eye Doctor Becomes Fellow

Dr M. Emily Linden, a Pasadena optometrist, was awarded the designation of "Fellow, International Academy of Orthokeratology" (FIAO) in April 2013.

Pasadena, CA, May 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dr. M. Emily Linden, O.D. was awarded the designation of "Fellow, International Academy of Orthokeratology" (FIAO) in April 2013 after completing all clinical requirements as well as passing oral and written examinations in Chicago. Dr. Linden has practiced optometry at Linden Optometry, A P.C. in Pasadena for over 10 years, and is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry. As an orthokeratologist, Dr Linden fits near-sighted children and teens with specialized contact lenses designed to reshape the cornea during sleep, much like braces realigning the teeth. In the morning, the contact lenses are removed, and the student can see clearly at school without eyeglasses, in most cases. Orthokeratology ("Ortho-K") is also popular among teens and adults who participate in sports, as they no longer need to wear glasses or contacts during the day when playing soccer, basketball, football, swimming, or surfing. Ortho-K is a less expensive and safer alternative to surgical vision correction.

The International Academy of Orthokeratology (IAO) is a worldwide organization of orthokeratologists who provide a non-surgical alternative for the correction of nearsightedness, astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia. The mission is to establish policy and to develop and update protocols and education for doctors performing corneal reshaping (orthokeratology).

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a progressive disease affecting 1.6 billion children and adults worldwide, with expectations that the number will hit 2.5 billion by 2020. Research now shows that orthokeratology can slow the elongation of the eye which contributes to progressive nearsightedness in children and young adults. 20/20 vision can be restored in as little as one day to one month depending on severity. The health implications of progressive myopia can place children at risk for eye diseases like retinal detachments and glaucoma as they reach adulthood.
