Berlin, Germany, May 09, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The current top ten music applications on Facebook total 74M monthly active users (MAU). This is an increase of 18M MAU since this time last year. With the release of Twitter Music and news that Spotify is expanding, metricsmonk takes a look at the top music apps on Facebook and the development of the music industry over the past 12 months using Facebook and Mobile anayltics service, metricsmonk.
The top five music apps on Facebook total a massive 61M monthly active users (MAU). Of that number, just over half of those users are attributed to Spotify – the biggest music app on Facebook, boasting just less than 33M MAU. Spotify continues to expand its service, recently opening up into Asian and Latin American markets, amongst others. The app has seen a huge boost over the past year, almost doubling its number of Facebook app users from 19M MAU at this time last year. Pandora, SoundCloud, Deezer and iHeartRadio complete the top five music apps, but none come close to seeing the sort of figures Spotify has now come to expect.
Pandora’s monthly active users dropped sharply in the middle of last year and have continued dropping ever since, now stagnating at around 8M MAU, under half of the 18M MAU the app had at this time last year. SoundCloud, Berlin’s music sharing service, challenges Pandora for second place with 7.8M MAU. This application encourages users to create and share their own music and has doubled its number of users from last year which stood at just under 4M MAU. French music streaming service Deezer, sees its user figures climbing steadily and currently sit just under Pandora at 7.8M MAU, tripling its figures from last year which saw the app with 2M MAU. Finally, radio service, iHeartRadio almost doubles its users from last year seeing them up from 2.7M MAU to 4M MAU.
One app that makes the top ten music apps is Rdio, an ad-free music service created by Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Launched in 2010, this much talked about service has climbed the music industry apps on Facebook over the past year increasing its monthly active user base by almost 700%. It currently resides in tenth spot in the top ten music apps according to MAU having garnered almost 1M MAU. Now part of Twitter Music, alongside music streaming giant Spotify, Rdio is definitely a music streaming service to keep your eye on.
The music streaming applications seem to be tending towards a more personal model, tailoring playlists and song selections to your mood or situation. Songza is one such app that acquired $3.8M funding in April and recently gave its iOS app a boost to improve the quality of service for its consumers. Spotify’s recent acquisition of Tunigo, a similar app that rivals Songza sees the Swedish music service moving in a similar direction alongside the 8tracks application which also curates personalized playlists. Songza comes in at number 11 on the Facebook rankings for music apps with 980.000 MAU whilst 8tracks holds 16th place with 530.000MAU.
