Brick Pi Robots: Raspberry Pi Meets LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT
Dexter Industries Uses Kickstarter.com to Fund Its Latest Product for Educational Robotics
Stafford, VA, May 13, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dexter Industries is using the popular crowd-sourcing website, Kickstarter.com, to launch its latest project, the Brick Pi. The Brick Pi is a system that converts the popular board-sized-computer, Raspberry Pi, into a robot that is compatible with the LEGO® Mindstorms system. The project is a board and case that can connect to LEGO® Mindstorms Sensors, motors, and LEGO parts to turn the credit card sized Raspberry Pi into a robot. Dexter Industries founder John Cole commented, “We were really enthusiastic about the BrickPi, but we weren’t sure how it would be received. However, Kickstarter supporters have really surprised us with their excitement for this project. We’ve really been humbled by the incredible response we have gotten.”
The BrickPi has the functionality to allow you to connect up to three NXT Motors and up to four sensors to the Raspberry Pi. It has a 9V battery power source that powers the motors, sensors, and Raspberry Pi, un-tethering the Pi and letting it roam free. The hardware for controlling the motors and sensors is based on the popular and open-source Arduino microcontroller platform.
In addition to connecting the LEGO motors and sensors to the Raspberry Pi, the BrickPi project introduces a sturdy case with holes that are compatible with LEGO parts. This unique Raspberry Pi case allows users to physically connect their Raspberry Pi to LEGO parts, and build a robot around it.
The project is dedicated to leaving the hardware and software open-source. To date a number of examples for the Raspberry Pi have been developed and placed online.
The Kickstarter project was fully funded within 24 hours of its launch. Since then the project funding has climbed to over 600% of its original goal. “The incredible interest and engagement from supporters has been overwhelming. We will now make sure our supporters receive the quality product they have funded as soon as possible,” said Cole.
