Twin City Kickboxers Bring Home Gold, Earn Spot on Team USA
Cellar Kickboxing students Jon Lewis, Neil Osten, and Derek Knudson win gold at U.S. Open and qualify for 2007 WAKO World Championships in Coimbra, Portugal.
New Brighton, MN, June 24, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Four fighters training at the Cellar Kickboxing Gym in New Brighton, MN earned champion status at the WAKO Amateur National Championships held in Crystal Lake, IL June 22-24. The event attracted kickboxers from across the county to compete for a National Title belt and a spot on Team USA when it travels to the 2007 W.A.K.O. World Championships in Coimbra, Portugal this coming November.
Fighters from The Cellar Fight Team winning championship belts include 28 year old and three time World Champion Jon Lewis, 33 year old karate black belt Derek Knudson, 24 year old and former Minnesota Gopher swimmer Neil Osten, and 17 year old Nick Riley who came into the tournament with no previous fight experience, but outclassed both his opponents (over 35 combined kickboxing fights) en route to winning his championship belt.
Neil Osten, who came into the tournament with a record of 1 win and 0 losses, also attracted a lot of attention at the event when he knocked out his opponent, Steve Fridh (9-4) of Rockford, IL just 10 seconds into round three with a left leg head kick.
The Cellar Fight Team is lead by trainers Justin Whiley and Chris Cichon. Both men were thrilled with their team’s performance at the tournament and the attention they attracted whenever a Cellar fighter entered the ring. The trainers’ next challenge is to prepare their fighters for the World Championships in Portugal which showcases the top professional and amateur fighters from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Many fighters in attendance will bring a hundred fights or more experience to the ring.
