Westinghouse Lighting Avoids $50,000 Backup Appliance Cost with Zetta.net Backup and Recovery for SQL and Hyper-V Server Backup
Leading Lighting Manufacturer Replaces Symantec Backup Exec with Zetta.net to Overcome the Challenges of Tape Backup
Sunnyvale, CA, May 16, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Zetta.net today announced that Westinghouse Lighting has selected Zetta.net's cloud server backup and disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) solution to optimize its backup and recovery processes. Since deploying Zetta.net the leading manufacturer and marketer of light bulbs, ceiling fans, light fixtures and decorative lighting hardware has seen a 50 percent improvement in time spent on backup management compared to its previous tape-based backup solution.
To manage the business data produced by Westinghouse’s design, manufacturing and marketing processes, the company has 35+ servers, including 10 virtual servers, which produce more than 5.5TB of data that must be backed up every week. This critical data, including creative images, marketing content, ERP information and Microsoft Exchange email data, needs to be reliably protected for easy access and recovery in the event of downtime or a natural disaster.
Traditionally, the company had relied on Symantec Backup Exec, backing data up from its servers. Over time, the archaic tape-based solution continued to have significant management and connectivity problems.
“We were having trouble with our backups every week,” said Carol Nestor, an IT support specialist with Westinghouse Lighting. “The Backup Exec restores were cumbersome and sometimes couldn’t even be executed because the backups were not complete.”
It was at this point that Westinghouse decided to evaluate options for online server backup. The idea of backing data up to an offsite location was very attractive because the company wanted to improve the performance of its disaster recovery solution in the event of a natural disaster. Specifically, Westinghouse wanted a software-only solution to avoid purchasing any more hardware or tapes. The solution needed to support both Windows and Mac systems, scale with the company's growth, and offer a set-it-and-forget-it type of management approach. Westinghouse also wanted a solution that would make restores fast and easy so it would never have to wait for a recovery again.
“The Zetta.net solution met all of our needs,” said Jesse Reyna, IT support supervisor for Westinghouse. “There are no appliances to hassle with, it has a very simple management dashboard, and restores are simple and easy. Even better, because it backs up our data offsite we were able to cancel our expensive offsite storage service. We're spending at least 50 percent less time managing our backups compared to our previous tape solution. Zetta.net has been excellent – from its responsive, 24x7 customer service, to its easy-to-manage and incredibly reliable cloud server backup solution. We couldn’t be more pleased.”
Westinghouse put Zetta.net's disaster recovery solution to the test during Hurricane Sandy. The company successfully backed up its critical transaction database to the East Coast data center and with the help of the customer service team was able to replicate the data to the West Coast data center just in time before Hurricane Sandy affected the area. Once offices were open and normal operations continued, they simulated a restore test which worked successfully without a hitch.
“Aging tape backup systems can cause organizations pain and costly downtime,” said Gary Sevounts, vice president of marketing, Zetta.net. “We offer a solution that seamlessly delivers the multiple functionality of cloud server backup, disaster recovery as a service and archiving in one, so companies can eliminate a lot of time and resources without spending exorbitant amounts of money. There is simply no reason to be held hostage by outdated and expensive appliance-based solutions anymore."
