Traverse City, MI, May 16, 2013 --(PR.com)-- On June 14-16, 6th Annual Cherry-Roubaix bicycle race and title sponsor Garan Lucow Miller, P.C. are pleased to host the first-ever downtown Traverse City State Championship cycling race course. In its fourth and fifth years, Cherry-Roubaix hosted the Michigan State Championship Road Race in Cedar, Michigan. Bringing spectators even closer to racers, the Sixth Annual Cherry Roubaix has been selected to host the State Championships Criterium Race for Masters, Women and Junior racers, bringing a State Championship Cycling race to downtown Traverse City for the first time in history.
“A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 1 mile), often run on closed-off city center streets,” offers Bob McLain, race director, Cherry-Roubax. “Crits are fast and fun to watch as the racing will loop past spectators multiple times. Spectators can watch a race unfold as cyclists use high speed tactics and sprint for Primes (pronounced “preems”), the prizes awarded during the race. This year’s Crit will start and finish in Old Town just south of Eighth and the best race side viewing will be along Union Street in the heart of Traverse City’s charming Old Town.”
The crit race, although extremely dynamic, is one of several multi-level events in the 2013 Cherry-Roubaix three day lineup. Friday, June 14 festivities kick off with a Time Trial Race on Old Mission Peninsula on a new course from Bower’s Harbor Park that screams 13.3 miles past lake shores, orchards, hops farms and scenic rolling hills.
Saturday morning attracts anyone with a bike to enjoy the Charity Ride on Old Mission Peninsula. From the Park Place downtown starting line to the scenic shores along Old Mission Peninsula, this easygoing tour offers a supported ride with multiple distances tailored to riders of all ability levels. Cherry-Roubaix Charity Ride benefits Munson Women’s Cancer Fund, and to date this annual Cherry-Roubaix event has raised over $15,000 for local families in need while battling cancer.
Back in Old Town, Traverse City, the weekend racing continues with the Old Town Crit featuring high intensity racing through the city streets. Rounding out Saturday for families and friends, the Kids Drag Race encourages little ones race to sign up on the spot for safe fun and get treats. Following the Kids Drag Race, the popular Cruiser Classic Relay lets loose for laughs as costumed competitors each complete laps on a cruiser bike to hand off pies from Grand Traverse Pie Company to their team members.
Saturday crescendos with fast pace action as the Men Pros race around the city blocks to set the stage for the day’s pinnacle: The Women’s Pro State Championship Criterium. Local racers pit themselves against the fastest women in the state, competing to be named the State Champ in their home town.
The weekend wraps up with the toughest Road Race in the state, the Cherry-Roubaix Road Race that starts and stops high atop Sugar Loaf Mountain in Cedar MI. This course has been nicknamed the “hilliest and hardest race” by many racers in Michigan, and across the finish line, the winners of the Omnium race weekend will be determined. “An Omnium is a competition that spans the three days of racing and tallies each racer’s points to award prizes to the top three in each category,” explains Cherry-Roubaix media director, Tim Barrons. “This is the Cherry Roubaix’s first year offering an Omnium, and the winner in each category will be wearing a Leaders Jersey, similar to the yellow jersey of the Tour de France, to serve as the penultimate prize for the weekend.”
In a world-class resort landscape of orchards, wineries, restaurants and boutique shopping, charming Traverse City casts a classic feeling of simpler times with family and friends. Beneath open, blue skies and fresh water, Cherry-Roubaix delivers an event for professional and amateur racers, cycling enthusiasts, volunteers and fans of all ages. Mark your calendars and book your travel plans to make Traverse City your one-stop vacation cycling destination where you can ride, race and have fun in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
