Maxtena Develops Combo Helical/UHF Antenna for Simultaneous Satellite Access
Rockville, MD, May 18, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Maxtena has developed a high performance multi-band antenna that combines proprietary Helicore® technology with a monopole-type UHF antenna in a single form factor.
The DualMax-Helical/UHF combines two antennas with a custom cable and connector. The helical element can be tuned for the GPS/GLONASS bands, Iridium network or Globalstar network. The helical element is integrated with a monopole-type UHF antenna providing a frequency range between 300 MHz and 800 Mhz.
The multi-band antenna combo is an ideal solution for applications requiring simultaneous access to different satellite systems for emergency communication; two examples are Iridium and COSPAS-SARSAT or Globalstar and COSPAS-SARSAT.
“With this new antenna solution we aim to address those handheld applications where a single physical antenna is desired, but it needs to cover different services with very different frequency and radiation pattern requirements, such as GPS and VHF. Our patented technology integrates two completely different antennas in the same volume, with considerable size reduction, very low coupling and uncompromised radiation pattern control,” said Dr. Carlo Di Nallo, chief technology officer at Maxtena.
The antenna can be encased in a protective radome and measures 50 mm in length by 13.2 mm in diameter from the top of radome to the base. The interface is a standard U.FL connector and is also available as a SMA, TNC, or other. The cable length and thickness can be customized.
The antenna product can be used with Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), Personal Locator Beacons (PLB), or an Aviation Distress Beacon (ELT) that transmits distress signals on the dedicated search and rescue 406 MHz frequencies. It can also be used with military radios and handheld navigational devices where the added advantage of simultaneous satellite access is needed.
