Christmas Lights Etc. & Students Pack Treats for Troops

Christmas Lights, Etc. was called upon to donate warehouse space that would accommodate an assembly line packing treats for military men and women.

Alpharetta, GA, May 21, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Christmas Lights Etc, one of the most successful online U.S. retailers of Christmas Lights, LED Holiday Lights, Artificial Christmas Trees, Prelit Garland and Outdoor Christmas Decor teamed up with Piney Grove Middle School to pack treats for troops.

In 2011, Piney Grove Middle School of Forsyth County, Georgia held its first Grizzly Great Day of Giving, also known as G3. The school’s tenets consist of the Five A’s: Academics, Arts, Athletics, Activities and Altruistic Endeavors. Grizzly Great Day of Giving was conceived to help fulfill the fifth tenet of philanthropic awareness and participation. Originally inspired by the United Way’s Day of Caring, Principle Terri North introduced the program two years ago to the staff and students of the school. “We want our students to learn outside the walls of their school and grow their servant leadership skills,” said North.

The volunteers consist of students, staff, parents and local businesses. The participants are called Grizzlies in honor of the school’s mascot. G3 2013 yielded almost 1300 Grizzlies, serving 2000+ hours on 59 projects. Projects included programs such as visiting senior centers, cleaning parks, caring for animals, packing cookies for U.S. Military Troops and many, many more.

Christmas Lights, Etc. was called upon to donate warehouse space that would accommodate an assembly line packing treats for military men and women. Employees joined the Grizzlies in writing cards and packing boxes full of delicious cookies and sweets for troops deployed overseas. “It was heartwarming to see the kids and employees happily working so hard to send a little bit of comfort to those that sacrifice so much to keep our country safe,” commented Chris Miller, Christmas Lights, Etc. Co-Founder. Miller went on to explain the company firmly believes in giving back to the community and also actively supports other causes like the American Red Cross.

This specific G3 program was orchestrated by Treat The Troops, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. Treat The Troops was established in 1990 by Jeanette Cram of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Wanting to do something to show support for the troops serving in the Gulf War, Cram decided to put her baking skills to work. What began as a small kitchen project has grown into a nationwide network of committed volunteers that have sent over 3 million cookies to the troops. All one has to do is read a few of the thank you letters sent by grateful recipients to understand the giant impact a small gesture of appreciation can make. The Organization also accepts tax deductible monetary donations for those that want to contribute but are not bakers.

Principal North’s philosophy of Altruistic Endeavors is a lesson to be shared. Community service is a wonderful way to brighten others’ lives and add value to neighborhoods. There are numerous worthy organizations in every community that need local volunteer support and Christmas Lights Etc. urges everyone to get involved.
