Anahuacalmecac International Preparatory High School of North America in Los Angeles Announces Participation in the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues

Indigenous Student Leaders and Faculty from Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory High School of North America Participated in the 12th Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues of the United Nations on Tuesday, May 21 in New York.

Los Angeles, CA, May 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- What: Mexican indigenous student leaders and faculty from Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory High School of North America, the first and only Mexican indigenous charter high school and the only International Baccalaureate high school in Los Angeles, participated in the 12th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues of the United Nations. Representing their school community as well as the Zapoteca and Azteca nations, the Anahuacalmecac delegates focused on the right to native language education in public school curriculum for all indigenous youth in the United States, and raised the call for support for their native charter school in the international arena in light of the risk of its charter revocation this year by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. The first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in 2002. UNPFII holds annual two-week sessions; its 12th session was held from May 20 – 31, 2013.
