APICS New York City-Long Island Welcome Lockheed Martin and Johnson & Johnson Execs to Discuss Solving the Skill Gap Crisis

Panel Discussion with Lockheed Martin and Johnson Johnson Executives about the need for improvements within education to meet the needs of manufacturing; filling the skills gap crisis.

New York, NY, May 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Manufacturing has been the core of the American economy since the Industrial Revolution. The nation has found wealth and prosperity through the advances in manufacturing. There are now many concerns on why manufacturing has lost its glamour and importance in the American economy in the 21st century.

Manufacturing is considered out of date and careers in this sector of economy are perceived as not challenging, lacking growth-opportunity, followed by physical misconception that manufacturing is dirty, dank, and dangerous.

Incoming employees are unprepared for the advanced skills needed for 21st century manufacturing firms. Traditionally, manufacturing and education do not necessarily come together with current needs in the workplace.

Due to strategic alliances now taking place between APICS, The Association for Operations Management, and education programs that support STEM-based curriculum, the stride toward better learning experiences, such as with internships and apprenticeships, are starting to take form.

"The workforce skills crisis issues on Long Island are of utmost importance to all manufacturers, distributors and associations that support these companies; that is why it is so encouraging to strategically align with and create programs to meet these skills requirements. We strongly believe we will be better able to serve this territory united and have been compelled to form collaborations to do this. Having this Professional Development Meeting, PDM, at the SCCC Manufacturing Technology Center proves collaboration leads to success and will give our members and guests an opportunity to see one successful program addressing this concern," stated Dr. Jill O'Sullivan, President, APICS NYC/ LI Chapter.

APICS New York City-Long Island chapter will welcome Michael Parker, the VP of Manufacturing of Lockheed Martin, and George Nickel III, formerly of Johnson &Johnson, who both serve on the Manufacturing Executive Leadership Council with APICS NYC-LI President, Dr. O'Sulllivan. They will discuss these issues as they relate to manufacturing in the 21st century. The APICS New York City-Long Island's Professional Development Meeting will be held Tuesday June 25, 2013, 5:30 PM, at Suffolk Community College's Brentwood, New York, campus for this riveting discussion. A guided tour of the Brentwood campus' technology center will also be held to show the advances in manufacturing processes and what skill sets that are required to be a successful candid to be employed in a manufacturing company.
