Discovery Lies Ahead in "Ghosts and All" Exhibition Opens Sat. June 8th at WWA Gallery
“Ghosts and All” opening Saturday, June 8th at WWA Gallery and highlights the works of seven artists; Sadie Figueroa, Ashley Fisher, Nicole Gustafsson, Martin Hsu, Pete Oswald, Matt Ritchie, and John “The Super Ugly” Williams. Each artist shares an affinity for storytelling through compelling characters and their unique visions of the world we live in.

Inspired by what is visible and tangible as well as the allure and possibilities for what we can’t see, “Ghosts and All” will whisk viewers away on a colorful journey in a quest for discovery and adventure.
Open to the public, the gallery reception for “Ghosts and All” is from 7-10PM on Saturday, June 8th. The exhibition will run until July 6th, 2013.
About the Artists:
Sadie Figueroa graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a degree in Character Design and has worked as a freelance artist for Disney and Cartoon Network. This background has translated into paintings of darling, whimsical characters that exude irresistible charm.
Ashley Fisher is a Los Angeles based freelance artist working in the Animation industry. Surprisingly, her fine art work is a departure from any cartoon departure from any cartoon aesthetic and instead she methodically transforms and utilizes cut paper for delicate and intricate depictions of people and animals.
Nicole Gustafsson’s childhood adventures in Norfolk, Nebraska helped shape much of her paintings of idyllic nature scenes. Discovery and enchantment lies ahead in colorful, sweeping landscape or small terrarium dwellings rendered in careful, loving detail.
Martin Hsu draws inspiration from his heritage, family, and the natural world to create deeply personal paintings that are uniquely heartfelt. Hsu’s background includes a long history in character design and animation work for Disney and Nickelodeon, as well as being the creator of the popular Ruby Gloom character. Hsu has an active and extensive art empire; his fine art has led him to exhibitions around the world including fine art shows for Sanrio, Hasbro, and Disney while his vast array of personal projects encompass publishing, clothing, and vinyl toys.
Pete Oswald is a seasoned professional in the Animation industry whose credits include traditional animation, CG and stop-motion. Oswald’s work as an Illustrator and Designer include Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Madagascar 2, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, ParaNorman, and Hotel Transylvania. His short film, The Story of Walls (2009), earned him an Annie Award nomination. In his fine art work, Oswald uses his vast skill and imagination to create worlds and moments that glow with life.
Matt Ritchie is multifaceted and meticulous in his craft be it dioramas, paintings, sculptures or detailed images rendered with a homely ballpoint pen. Creating playful works that address complicated personal and social issues, Ritchie looks to skateboard culture, comics, cartoon art, popular culture, Old Master print makers, and Victorian engravings. Throughout various works, a reoccurring motif is the “136 rat” which carries a deep and personal significance of death, hope, remembrance and endurance.
John “The Super Ugly” Williams is an Oakland, CA based freelance artist who has illustrated children’s books under his company name “The Super Ugly”. Influenced by the writers and illustrators Maurice Sendak, Mercer Mayer, and Dr. Seuss, Williams creates drawings on paper of strange and expressive creatures, people, and monsters filled with joy and humor.
