Sunday June 9th: Salem Dog Walk to Benefit Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation at Salem Common, MA
Salem, MA, June 09, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Lace up your shoes, leash up your four-legged friends and head to Salem Common this Sunday, June 9th to help Share The Vision®. The third annual Salem Dog Walk will be held from noon until 3 p.m. to benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, New England’s only Guide Dog School. The non-profit has placed more than 1,300 of its specially bred and trained German Shepherd Guide Dogs with men and women who are blind across North America, including hundreds right here in Massachusetts. Fidelco provides these life-changing partners at no cost to the clients they serve.
This family-friendly fundraising event features an organized dog walk through Salem’s beautiful historic district, raffle prizes including Jimmy Buffet concert tickets, a pet photo contest, Salem Police K-9 demos, Fidelco Guide Dog and puppy demos, and much more. Salem’s Mayor, Kimberley Driscoll, welcomes all walkers and dogs. “With more than 4,000 registered dogs within eight square miles, it is easy to see why Salem is considered the most dog-friendly city in the state!”
The Third Annual Walk for Fidelco is sponsored by Essex Park, Peabody Glen, and State Street Corporation and is hosted by the Salem Lions Club. The Fidelco Guide Dog Walk will begin and end on historic Salem Common. The Walk trail for this year's event will bring walkers and dogs down Essex Street, through the heart of downtown Salem and past some of the architecture, history and mystique that make Salem a destination city for people from around the world.
Registration opens at noon and the Dog Walk kicks off at 12:45 p.m. Festivities at Salem Common run through 3:00 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. This is a rain or shine event.
About Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation
Fidelco is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in Bloomfield, CT, that breeds, trains and places its own, unique “breed within a breed” of German Shepherd Guide Dogs with men and women who are blind. Each Fidelco Guide Dog costs $45,000 and takes two years to produce. They are given to clients at no cost.
Fidelco provides 24/7 client support for the entire working life of its guide dogs – typically 10+ years. Fidelco relies solely on the generosity and financial support of individuals, foundations, corporations and civic organizations to help Share the Vision®.
Fidelco has placed over 1,300 German Shepherd Guide Dogs throughout North America – in 41 states and five Canadian provinces. Fidelco pioneered “In-Community placement” in the United States — a process that allows guide dog users to be trained in the communities where they live and work.
Fidelco has also placed hundreds of its German Shepherd Dogs with law enforcement agencies; first responders; search and rescue; and missing child recovery organizations to help protect our fellow citizens and keep them safe.
