Two Scholarship Winners of the Kimberly Gales Emerging Artists Scholarship

Since 2005 Portland Open Studios has been awarding scholarships for participation in the tour to artists under 30. This year’s winners couldn’t be more different. Jennifer Mercedes large paintings are exuberant stream of conscious “doodles” filled with layers of abstract patterns, childlike figure drawings, scrawled text and vivid colors. Benjamin Heiken’s black and white pencil portraits of ordinary people, suspended in a moment of everyday life, are meticulously crafted with a quiet emotional impact that takes one by surprise. What they have in common is their ability to translate their artistic vision into artworks that are both compelling and beautiful.

What's New:
Each year a different jury of arts professionals selects the participants giving us a different group of artists to present. New artists -- they always have new artists on the tour, quite a few are even new to Portland. New artworks, New directions -- Don’t neglect their returning artists, all have new work. See their new directions. The artists are a cross section of art in Portland including emerging artists and older artists with impressive exhibition records. Every style and media is represented. Blown. fused, leaded, cast glass, and glass mosaic artists are all on the tour showing all aspects of glass as a medium. More variety in painting: more abstract work, more narrative paintings, and a few political ones. More found object sculpture.
