Though Timothy Murphy grew up in a loving, middle-class Catholic home, from his earliest years, he had a sense of not belonging. Unhappy at school, feeling he could never live up to the standards of his “perfect” older brother, he simply gave up trying. What he longed for was to travel and, most of all, “to be free.” It wasn’t long before he became the family’s problem child.
When Timothy Leary made his way into town in 1968, young Timothy Murphy embraced the rock ‘n’ roll/hippie lifestyle: long hair, pot smoking, casual sex, and dropping acid (LSD). At school, he became “cool,” taking on an anti-hero persona. He attended a Catholic Church and a Catholic school, with parents who believed that nuns and priests could do no wrong. Unfortunately the opposite would prove to be true. During his teenage years, he became a victim of sexual abuse by a neighborhood priest, which caused psychological damage that was both mentally and sexually crippling.
After high school Murphy found his niche working in restaurants. But as his responsibilities and salaries increased, so did his alcohol addiction. Through his twenties and thirties, he was a successful restaurateur with management positions in some of the most prestigious properties on the East Coast. His drug addictions went hand in hand with his growing sexual appetite, and he was, he admits, a magnet for women. As he moved deeper into the world of drugs, he turned to crack cocaine, which caused him to spend money faster than he could make it. It wasn’t long before he found himself in such a state of depression that he tried to commit suicide. Over and over again, he would check himself into a rehabilitation center, stay clean for a while, and then fall back into his old degenerative ways.
Finally after one too many DWIs (Driving While Intoxicated), the law caught up with Murphy. He was placed into Florida’s Drug Abuse Foundation (DAF) program, before being sentenced to ten months at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Drug Farm, a boot camp for drug offenders. It was while at DAF that Murphy reached an epiphany, taking a serious look at his miserable life. It was at this pivotal point that he asked God for help. From that day forward Murphy’s life became one of giving and serving, which would one day lead to the start of his own ministry and a truly successful life.
“God was in control. I had nothing to do with it. I placed my life under His direction. I vowed to listen and obey. This was the first real commitment that I ever made. I was brand new, fresh, alive and well. The beauty was in knowing that I had nothing to do with it. It was God’s gift to me for coming to Him with such fervency and determination.
