Rollins MBA Awards First “Gene Apelado Scholarship” Winners
Winter Park, FL, July 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Crummer Graduate School of Business awarded five Rollins MBA students “Gene Apelado Scholarships” to subsidize their travel to Trieste, Italy to study industrial manufacturing in the cruise ship and cruise ship engine industries.
The scholarships were made possible by a generous donation from Gene Apelado, the president of AMAG, LLC, a prominent Internet marketing firm headquartered in Orlando. This scholarship is fully funded for five years and is used to enhance the school’s mission of offering its students experiential learning opportunities abroad.
The students toured the ship yards and met with senior officials of Fincantieri, one of the largest shipbuilding groups in the world. Fincantieri designs and constructs complex ships with high technological content, including some of the world’s largest cruise ships, merchant and naval vessels, and mega yachts.
The Rollins MBA students teamed with MBA students from the MIB School of Management in Trieste, a prestigious school with students from over 65 countries, 60 percent of which are international. Together the students worked with senior officials of Wartsila, a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets, to try to predict changes in the inter-related industries of cruise ships and engine manufacturing.
"I feel very fortunate to be a Gene Apelado Scholarship award recipient and to have studied in Italy,” said Luke Kelly, one of the scholarship winners. “I learned firsthand why large manufacturers don't outsource all of their machining and basic operations to more efficient suppliers: risk. When a manufacturer is completely dependent on suppliers for critical components, any failure in the global supply chain shuts down the manufacturer.”
“You really understand this when you are inside the giant companies we were able to visit as a result of Mr. Apelado’s support,” added Kelly. “This kind of experiential learning was an important part of my Rollins MBA."
Christina Goodwin, another of the Gene Apelado Scholarship winners, concurred. “The opportunity to gain international experience through the travel component, and work with global industry leaders was a defining point of my Rollins MBA."
All Rollins MBA students have multiple opportunities to travel abroad while they are enrolled. And the school offers free courses for life to all graduates, so many students have taken courses with a travel component even after earning their MBA. Rollins MBA courses with international travel components have recently brought students to Argentina, Austria, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Vietnam.
