Aya is Cultivating the Next Generation of Community Advocates

Atlanta, GA, July 03, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Aya Academy of Excellence's Summer's Cool campers are transforming their community through weekly service learning. From creek clean-ups to promoting literacy amongst preschool children, these young people are establishing a legacy of service. Cultivating a heart for service to others through hands-on activities has made an impression on the collective of elementary and middle school advocates as well as an impact to those they have serviced.

Through a collaboration with the Georgia Wildlife Federation, the Summer's Cool campers collected debris cluttering Little Ivy Creek, which meanders throughout the 88 acre conservation site at the Mill Creek Nature Preserve. Other collaborations, including the Hope Clinic at the Emory Vaccine Center, youth mentoring organization Atlanta Cares and the youth-led environmental advocacy agency Greening Forward, provide the youth participants an opportunity to develop and lead initiatives to support the health, safety and sustainability of their community.

In recent weeks, the campers created story stones to assist in the literacy development of preschool children and distributed dozens of meals to homeless individuals receiving services from an agency situated a few blocks from Centenniel Park. By investing time and effort into their community, each Aya Academy participant is engaging in activities to cultivate leadership skills which will benefit them in and outside of the classroom.

Stephanie Hunte, executive director of the academic outreach program, created Summer's Cool to combat the academic lag which occurs during the summer months. "The potential of young people to be major forces in community vitalization is often overlooked. Young people have an innate ability to brainstorm innovative solutions to every day issues. They just need to be armed with people and material resources to bring those solutions to fruition," she says.

The camp includes two hours of daily STEM and literacy studies, weekly college campus visitations and project based learning centered on a smattering of careers, including architecture, engineering and environmental science. The students have visited the campuses of SCAD, Georgia Tech, Morehouse and UGA during their investigation into various career paths. Upcoming service projects this summer include a playground rehab using recycled materials and an infectious disease PSA video targeted to teens.

Aya Academy welcomes the support of both volunteers and those interested in investing in its service learning initiatives. Currently they are raising funds to offset the cost of a fifteen passenger van to transport their youth participants to service learning locations throughout metro Atlanta. This fall, Aya Academy is set to lanuch its Learning Lab program to continue its service learning during the school term. Donations may be made through their website: www.ayaacademy.com.
