Bob Moore Construction Completes Four-Story Parking Garage for Medtronic in San Antonio Texas
Arlington, TX, July 04, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Medtronic, a leading medical technology company, was outgrowing the parking capacity of its San Antonio call center facility and needed a design-build contractor to create and build a new garage to meet its expanding staff of employees.
Bob Moore Construction was chosen as the design build contractor for a new four-story parking garage, built over a portion of their property’s existing parking area. Medtronic had previously hired Bob Moore Construction to be the design/build contractor on its 140,000 SF office building in Haltom City, Texas. “We had a good experience 12 years ago with Bob Moore,” said Rick Baker, Project Manager for Medtronic, Inc. “We invited them to bid again on the parking garage project and had another good experience.”
The design, created with Alliance Architects of Richardson, TX, added 342 elevated parking spaces over a portion of the building’s existing ground level parking lot. Constructed with precast concrete, the new garage features four floors of parking spaces. The first three levels feature interior lighting. The floors are connected with an elevator, two sets of stairs in the center of the garage and two fire escape stairways at the ends. Emergency lights and security beacons are located on all four floors of the garage.
“The greatest challenge we faced on this project was that we built this garage in an active, heavily trafficked parking lot,” said Larry Knox, Senior Vice President for Bob Moore Construction. “The call center remained in full operation during construction so we couldn’t close the entire parking area to do our work. This meant that we were consistently working in close proximity to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.”
To minimize impact on Medtronic employees Bob Moore Construction built the garage in three phases, closing one portion of the parking lot at a time. Close coordination with Medtronic representatives and the subcontractors allowed the garage to be completed in a tight 180-day window with no safety issues or incidents.
Mr. Baker was very pleased with how the project was managed and with the finished product. "Overall the project went very smoothly," he said. "Our employees love the new facility because they finally have all the parking they need."
“I've known Ed McGuire and Larry Knox for 12 years,” he added. “When they make a promise, they keep it. They’re good communicators and they work very hard.”
“We were extremely happy to continue our relationship with Medtronic on another project,” said Mr. Knox. "When you have experienced professionals like Rick Baker working on behalf of the customer it makes the coordination and response to challenges of a project like this much more effective."
“The Medtronic parking garage is an excellent example of yet another type of project that Bob Moore can deliver,” added Mr. Knox. “As this facility shows, we can build a showcase multi-level parking garage as a stand-alone project in a challenging setting – and complete the job on an extremely tight schedule to meet the customer’s needs.”
