Bicycle Art Salon to Host Cupid Courier Aug. 16
Oakland, CA, July 04, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Slimm Buick and Justine tenZeldam, of the Bicycle Art Salon, will be holding their monthly meeting Friday, August 16, 2013 from 7-10pm in Oakland, CA featuring Cupid Courier LLC of San Francisco. Must RSVP to reserve space by contacting the organizers via phone or text at 510-230-8270. The July meeting of the Salon has been canceled, as everyone in the bike community prepares for Pedalfest (7/20/2013 in Jack London Square, Oakland CA).
The informal meeting, with Q&A, will feature Cupid Courier Collective LLC, a worker-owned “bike messenger” and delivery service that aims to use sustainable transportation, especially bicycles, whenever possible. According to their website (www.cupidcourier.com) they are a worker-owned business and every member/worker can handle all aspects of the business.
The Salon is by invitation, which can be obtained by contacting your hosts Slimm & Justine. You will then be given the final location, which is normally very close to Fruitvale and Lake Merritt BART stations. To request your invitation, email bicycleartsalon@gmail.com, or phone 510-356-5665.
The Bicycle Art Salon is a discussion group on the subject(s) of art, film, music, bicycles and more, at the home and studio of Slimm Buick. Attendees will include the great minds of San Francisco, Oakland and the World, and they are always seeking feedback on possible future subjects and speakers. Past artist, designers, performers and makers have included Harrod Blank, Director of the Award-winning Documentary, Automorphosis, Robert Raburn, BART Director and Nan Eastep, of Bspoke Tailor.
The event is free, with occasional donations for worthy cycling causes received, it also includes Slimm's famous, fresh hot salsa (straight outta the Mission). You are encouraged to bring something to share as well, or even sell, if bicycle-related (please call ahead to discuss). There is usually plenty of (free) street parking, and for those who ride bicycles they will have a secure spot inside, or on the front or back patio.
About your hosts: Slimm Buick: Slimm is a DJ, performer, artist and bicycle builder famous for his wacky Art Bikes, or "Freak Bikes" as kids these days call them. They've been shown in galleries and at places such as San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Yerba Buena Gardens, Oakland Museum, The Gene Autry (Los Angeles) and numerous other venues. Current projects include ceramic jewelry, and a documentary on Art Bikes and Culture. His 15 minutes of fame, thanks to the Discovery Channel show, Weird Wheels, was “not enough,” according to Buick. “There are so many stories to be told today. Mine began 25 years ago (as an art bike creator) but the next generation is giving us old timers a run for our money!” he said.
A third-generation San Franciscan, he is also known for his knowledge of historic American artifacts and antiques, including recorded music of the 20th Century. He currently has a collection of over 3,500 vintage vinyl 45s (he is a part time Western, Blues, Jazz DJ with a regular Rockabilly, Country and Western show, at the 23 Club Brisbane, CA) every 4th Saturday. Slimm also rents and shows Art Bikes at special events, parties, etc. as well as movie production/set designers (most recent film is Sony Pictures' Rent). His wife, Justine tenZeldam likes to ride her “Scraper Bike” and other Slimm Buick Custom Bicycles in parades or to the grocery store, and is known to occasionally belt out a torch song at the local Piano Bar, The Alley, where they met in 2005.
