Renter Nation Calls For Security Deposit Reform
America's only nationwide renting lifestyle advocacy group calls for broad rental security deposit reform. Encourages landlords to explore viable options that already exist.
Sioux Falls, SD, July 09, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Renter Nation, (www.renternation.com) the country’s only nationwide group by, for, and about America’s more than 100 million residential renters and a leading advocate for the “renting lifestyle,” has called on the providers of rental housing to broadly reform their policies concerning security deposits.
Noting that there are many new, innovative services available to providers designed to lessen the need for rental deposits, Renter Nation has encouraged providers to implement such services.
Calling security deposit complaints from renters a nationwide problem, Renter Nation COO Steve Crawford cited surveys recently conducted by Tenants Together, California’s statewide renters’ rights group. These surveys revealed that more than 60% of California tenants reported improper withholding of rental deposit money.
In taking a cue from the California group, Mr. Crawford said that “Renter Nation’s initiative for the remained of the year will be to reach out to renters and property owner groups to find common ground to address the issue.”
“60% of rental housing is made up of properties of less than five units. It’s in the interests of these owners and larger multifamily providers to work toward an equitable solution. As renters, we’re willing to protect and promote rental housing. The industry should be as well,” Mr. Crawford added.
Mr. Crawford went on to note that many innovative and creative solutions have already been set in place within the rental housing industry designed to protect rental housing providers’ cash flow while at the same time enhance the opportunities for renters to secure quality rental housing.
He noted in particular the security deposit waiver program offered by HMS National, AON’s Rent Protect program, Co-Signers rent guarantee program and Neighborhood Pay Services’ rent assurance program. “Most landlords don’t know these products and services exist. By implementing them at little or no cost to themselves or their residents, the on-going contention over security deposits will take care of itself.”
