The Woods Project Embarks on Educational Summer Adventure
Houston, TX, July 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- 110 students and 30 volunteers will spend two weeks in the great outdoors.
The Woods Project, a Houston-based nonprofit that develops leadership capacity and life skills in low-income youth, today announced that 110 students and 30 volunteers will embark for a two-week, life-changing experience to Donner Pass, Glacier and Yosemite National Parks. The group will depart from Terminal E in Bush Intercontinental Airport on Saturday, July 13th between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.
“The Woods Project’s year-round programs are built around changing the life trajectory of low income students. All of our activities focus on the soft skills that students will need to achieve success in life,” said Steve Rosencranz, Founder of The Woods Project. “It’s a great learning experience for the kids, as well as the volunteers. We embark on our two-week adventure every summer, and our goal is to provide students an education they don’t receive in a classroom. Our students return home with a new worldview, applying skills honed in the wild that can be applied to everyday life situations.”
The Woods Project prepares students for college and adulthood by developing life and leadership skills through wilderness exploration. Students are exposed to challenging situations and diverse environments that encourages interest in science and the environment through focused outdoor education programming and hands-on learning opportunities. Many students participating have never left home or flown on a plane, let alone climbed a mountain or touched snow.
More than 2,500 students have been involved with The Woods Project since the organization’s inception in 2006. The Woods Project works with a number of schools throughout Houston to improve life trajectory, including 18 schools within Houston Independent School District, KIPP, YES and private schools that support low-income youth.
