Honoring a Texas Tradition, Newman Village Hosts Third Annual Newman Family BBQ on Fourth of July
Frisco Neighborhood Celebrates the Tradition of “Dinner on the Grounds” with Newman Family
Dallas, TX, July 12, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Newman Village marked the Fourth of July holiday by honoring a Texas tradition of its own - the Third Annual Newman Family BBQ at Newman Village on July 4, fashioned after Texas picnics of years gone by.
With smoked chicken, brisket and pulled pork as the main courses, Newman Village residents followed the tradition of the Newman Family’s ancestors by arriving for the barbecue with their own side dishes and desserts, thus completing a traditional “Dinner on the Grounds.”
“People’s Choice” awards were handed out for the best side dish and dessert. As the residents dined on sumptuous servings of barbecue, another slice of Americana was served as Newman Village children lined up their decorated bicycles for a parade around the Central Plaza Fountain and down Newman Boulevard, after which prizes were handed out for the best decorated entries.
“It’s a terrific glimpse into the world of Newman Village,” said Christen Brown, curator and community relations manager for the community. “If you closed your eyes, you could almost feel the the spirit of the old-fashioned picnics held by the Newman family.”
Indeed, there is a direct link from today’s Newman family barbecues and the picnics of yesteryear. The Newman family, along with other Frisco farm families, have participated in “Dinner on the Grounds” events since the 1800s.
“Dinner on the Grounds” refers to dinner gatherings among families in the South. Traditionally, the family that provided the “ground” for the meal also provided the main course. Visiting families would bring sumptuous sides and delicious desserts.
Located just off the Dallas North Tollway, Newman Village offers a lifestyle removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life but still connected to the finer things - upscale shopping, first-class sports and recreation opportunities, and the best employment centers in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
