The Picture of Health in Nassau County
Adelphi University offers free, open to the public summer seminar on the state of public health in its region. Included in the talk are plans for developing an approach to maintaining public health equitably in a diverse county.
Garden City, NY, July 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Suburbia is often depicted as picturesque, wholesome and orderly, a place of green lawns and healthy people. To many, Long Island seems a picture of suburban perfection, but deeper examination reveals some troubling facts about social health disparities that exist. With this in mind, Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health in collaboration with the Center for Health Innovation present a look at the current state of public health in Nassau County.
An Introduction to Public Health in the Suburbs: An Adelphi University Summer Seminar is planned for Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom located at 1 South Avenue in Garden City, NY.
The program will begin with an introduction by the Dean of Adelphi University’s newly named College of Nursing and Public Health, Patrick Coonan ’78 EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE. Dean Coonan is also the Acting Director of the Center for Health Innovation.
Speakers for the day include Lawrence Eisenstein, MD, FACP, Commissioner of Health for Nassau County, who will discuss the county’s experience with the Wisconsin Health Rankings; Martine Hackett, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Professions, Hofstra University School of Health Sciences and Human Services, who will talk on suburban health inequities; Philip Alcabes, PhD, Professor of Public Health and director of Adelphi’s Master of Public Health program will speak on a regional view of health; and preventing public health epidemics will be covered by Tavora Buchman, PhD, Director of the Division of Quality Improvement, Epidemiology and Research at the Nassau County Department of Health with Celina Cabello, MPH, Epidemiologist, Nassau County Department of Health.
