Luhrsen Law Group Administrator Opposes Proposed Amendments in Manatee County

In an effort to protect a stretch of the county, environmentalists and concerned residents have united to prevent amendments to an approved comprehensive plan for development in the Long Bar Pointe area. Opponents of the proposed amendments include Matt Bower, firm administrator of Luhrsen Law Group, an injury law firm in Sarasota that has long been associated with public policy. Mr. Bower, a lifelong resident of Bradenton and a fishing guide, says that Luhrsen Law Group has taken up the environmental cause because “this issue is close to home and means a great deal to the firm.”

Developers of the Long Bar Pointe project have proposed a map amendment that would turn the approved residential community into a resort and a text amendment that would allow construction along Sarasota Bay, an area considered to be environmentally sensitive. Opponents of the expanded plan cite the negative impact of the changes, which include a marina capable of handling 100-foot boats, removal of 20 to 40 acres of mangrove forests, and the dredging of a canal through an important piece of north Sarasota Bay. In a recent Bradenton Herald article, Manatee-Sarasota Sierra Club Chair Linda T. Jones stated, “The changes would apply countywide and allow exceptions to protections of water and air quality, wetlands, seagrasses, upland habitats, fish and shellfish harvesting, and natural disasters.”
