William Peace University’s Mary Lily Kenan Scholarship Awarded Grant by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust
Four-Year Baccalaureate University Receives Generous $170,000 Grant from Longtime Supporter
Raleigh, NC, August 01, 2013 --(PR.com)-- William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust has awarded the institution’s Mary Lily Kenan Scholarship with a $170,000 grant. A long-standing endowment for William Peace University, the scholarship was founded in 1991 by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust in honor of Mary Lily Kenan, a sister of William R. Kenan, Jr. and an 1896 graduate of the Peace Institute. A leading purpose of many grants delivered through the Kenan Charitable Trust has been to support education, with an increased emphasis on enhancing excellence of teaching and increasing student access to high-quality education. Specifically selecting individual institutions to support, the Trust offers various initiatives, including endowed professorships, scholarships and fellowships of distinction for colleges, universities and art institutions. Increasingly during the past two years, the Trust has also supported K-12 education and hunger-relief.
The Kenan family has a longstanding relationship with Peace. Mary Lily Kenan’s sister, Jessie Hargrove Kenan Wise, also graduated from Peace Institute in 1887. In 1979 the Kenan Charitable Trust awarded a grant to establish the William R. Kenan, Jr. Endowment Fund, named after Mary Lily and Jessie’s late brother, in an effort to recognize the Kenan family’s vested interest in Peace. One contribution from this fund assisted in the creation of Kenan Recital Hall in the Browne/McPhearson building on campus.
In its creation, the Mary Lily Kenan Scholarship represented scholastic opportunities for prospective students as well as the institution’s first full scholarship for students. For the last 22 years, the Mary Lily Kenan Scholarship has signified the single highest academic honor presented to a student of William Peace University. Awarded annually, the scholarship recognizes a student who exemplifies academic excellence meeting specific criteria, including ranking in the top 5 percent of his or her high school graduating class, a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and an SAT score of 1100 or above. Following an on-campus interview and written essay, William Peace University’s Vice President for Engagement determines the scholarship recipient. Once enrolled, the scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years if the recipient maintains a grade point average of 3.0 and receives no grade below a “C.”
