Welcome to the World of 4G
Find out how the arrival of 4G is expected to impact the IT strategies of those working within organisations with a focus on mobile, such as Betfair.
London, United Kingdom, August 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- By the end of 2013, the UK can look forward to having widespread, high-speed mobile networks in the form of 4G. Whilst this is undoubtedly good news for consumer, it will also have a significant impact for leaders within the IT industry.
With higher speeds and lower latency, business leaders within the IT industry are already considering the ways in which 4G networks might be expected to spark new opportunities for customer engagement, software development and remote working. There is certainly a great deal of hype surrounding the 4G roll-out, but CIOs must think practically about how increased speeds and reliability could impact and improve their current IT strategies.
With this in mind, several IT chiefs congregated earlier in the year at Computer Weekly’s CW500 Club to discuss how they believe the arrival of 4G mobile networks will impact the IT market, as well as software development within the mobile arena.
Speaking alongside Carlson Wagonlit CIO, Kevin O'Connor, and Aimia’s Head of Strategy, Katie Lips, was Ben Carter, global head of digital at Betfair. With Betfair having taking an innovative approach to mobile within its market, it is perhaps little surprise that the move to 4G technology is highly-anticipated within the company.
Carter revealed that he not only expected the 4G revolution to provide competitive opportunities, but also that it would become central to the introduction of new customers. Betfair’s bet matching system currently completes a higher number of transactions each day than the New York Stock Exchange. However, the process is remarkably similar, in that the system matches pairs different bets from various members in the same way that stock exchange systems look to match those who are looking to buy shares with individuals who are selling them.
This is just one area of the Betfair business in which advanced mobile capabilities are likely to prove influential in delivering a superior user experience. In addition, mobile is integral to Betfair as a business, in that it drives revenue by providing an introductory platform for new customers.
“[Mobile] is key to us because it brings in a different set of customer through more recreational betting,” explained Carter. “Previously, you could only put a bet on in a bookmakers, then you could online, and now you can via mobile.”
For Betfair, advancements in mobile technology (and particularly those offered by 4G) will allow software developers to produce technology which offers a wider range of betting facilities. Increased network speeds, for example, will allow Betfair to calculate odds during a football game as the scoreline changes, allowing customers to place a number of different bets throughout.
The trend for new customers to first encounter businesses online is undoubtedly growing and, as a result, mobile can have a significant impact on sales. Harnessing the power of mobile has become imperative and the significance of this platform is only likely to increase with the introduction of 4G.
