When Cleveland’s Heroes Went by Mudcat, Tito and Sudden Sam
New Baseball Book Celebrates the Cleveland Indians of the 1960s
Lewis Center, OH, August 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- “Indians Heroes” by Carroll Conklin recalls the best (and a few of the worst) of the Cleveland Indians baseball players during the 1960s.
For today’s Indians fans, it’s an easy-to-read introduction to Indians stars of the past like Vic Davalillo, Max Alvis and Sonny Siebert. For fans who were there, Indians Heroes will bring back memories of baseball afternoons at Municipal Stadium in the 1960s.
The book profiles 83 of the infielders, outfielders, catchers and pitchers who played for the Cleveland Indians in the 1960s. Some of the players featured in the book are:
- “Sudden Sam” McDowell, the left-handed fireballer who struck out 325 batters in 1965, still the American League record for a southpaw.
- Leon “Daddy Wags” Wagner, who had the Indians’ highest single-season home run mark in the 1960s.
- Dick Donovan, the 1961 ERA champion who was traded to Cleveland in 1962 and won 20 games for the Tribe … at age 34.
- Luis Tiant, the pitcher who lost 20 games in 1969 after leading the American League in ERA in 1968.
- John Romano, the two-time All-Star catcher who helped bring Rocky Colavito back to Cleveland.
The book also lists the All-Stars and league leaders who played for the Indians during the 1960s, as well as listing the franchise leaders in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, pitching victories, strikeouts and earned run average for the decade.
According to Conklin, the Cleveland Indians of the 1960s were a source of both excitement and frustration for their loyal fans. “The Indians struggled for most of the 1960s, finishing as high as third in the American League in 1968,” Conklin stated. “They had tantalizing talent, on the mound and in the batter’s box, and the American League’s best collection of strikeout pitchers during the 1960s.”
