Carolina Ballet Unveils 2013-2014 Season

Professional Ballet Company Announces Performances for Its 16th Season, Including The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and Sleeping Beauty

Raleigh, NC, August 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Robert Weiss, artistic director and CEO of Carolina Ballet (http://www.carolinaballet.com), has announced the dynamic lineup for the company’s upcoming 2013-2014 season, which includes their holiday production of The Nutcracker, an ode to George Balanchine, a Shakespeare classic and Sleeping Beauty as it has never been seen before. This season’s schedule is as follows:

Balanchine Celebration Featuring Rubies (Thursday, Oct. 10-Sunday, Oct. 27, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Carolina Ballet has had a love affair with the work of George Balanchine since the company’s first program in 1998. Over the past 15 seasons, the company has presented 22 ballets from America’s greatest choreographer and founding artistic director of the New York City Ballet. This year’s production of Balanchine Celebration features “Rubies” from the ballet Jewels, which returns to the ballet’s repertoire after nine years. The program will also feature a selection of other Balanchine favorites.

Messiah (Wednesday, Nov. 27-Sunday, Dec. 1, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium)
Carolina Ballet marks the beginning of the holiday season with the return of Messiah, set to Handel’s magnificent and moving score. The production will be accompanied by live music and vocals from 130 members of the North Carolina Master Chorale under the direction of Alfred E. Sturgis.

The Nutcracker (Saturday, Dec. 7-Sunday, Dec. 8, UNC Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill; Dec. 14-15, Durham Performing Arts
Center; Dec. 20-29, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium)
Carolina Ballet’s spectacular Nutcracker returns to the stage for the 2013 lineup. This past season’s Nutcracker was an even bigger success than when grand-scale magical illusions debuted in 2011. This truly special production, featuring choreography by Weiss, makes The Nutcracker memorable family experience.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Thursday, Feb. 13-Sunday, March 2, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Weiss has selected one of the great works in the classical canon on which to create his newest ballet. Vivaldi’s Four Seasons showcases the chill of winter, the languor of summer, the freshness of spring and the melancholy of fall. This full company work will express the cycle of life through the emotions the seasons evoke. In addition, Zalman Raffael, who contributed to this season’s Rhapsody and A Street Symphony, will also create a new work for the piece.

Romeo and Juliet (Thursday, March 13-Sunday, March 30, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater; Friday, May 10, Durham Performing Arts Center)
Carolina Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet is set to Prokofiev’s powerful score. It mesmerizes audiences in the grandest manner with choreography perfect for every moment, from the humor of the street dancers to the romance of the star-crossed couple and to the rivalry of the feuding families.

Sleeping Beauty (Thursday, May 15-Sunday, May 18, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium)
One of the most beautiful classic fairy tales, Weiss’ Sleeping Beauty was conceived in 2008 and is set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, which is the longest of any of the composer’s ballet pieces. While closely following the choreography of Marius Petipa, Weiss still keeps the ballet current and fresh. This year’s production will feature luxuriously crafted costumes and amazing scenery, plus the addition of a stage-filling dragon that the Prince must kill before reaching the sleeping Princess Aurora, all coming together to form a spectacular performance for all ages to enjoy.
