Tenet Florida Physician Services Welcomes Board-Certified Bariatric Surgeon Specializing in Adolescent and Pediatric Surgery

West Palm Beach, FL, August 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Tenet Florida Physician Services (TFPS) introduces Robert Cywes, M.D., to the West Palm Beach area as a pediatric and adult surgeon with a commitment to reducing obesity and the impact of metabolic syndrome on adolescent patients. Dr. Robert Cywes holds the distinction of being the first surgeon in Northeast Florida certified in LAP-BAND® surgery. Prior to joining TFPS, Dr. Cywes was the Director at Jacksonville Weight Loss Center, where he led the adolescent and bariatric surgery departments and developed a nationally recognized Center of Excellence for Obesity Surgery. Preceding his directorship, Dr. Cywes was a pediatric and adult surgeon at Jacksonville Surgical Associates.

Dr. Cywes also holds certifications in LAP-BAND® Bariatric Surgery, Imbricated LapBand, Gastric Sleeve Surgery and Covidien Masters Bariatric Surgery. Because of his extensive experience and knowledge, he has been appointed to the Allergen Council for the Advancement of Bariatrics, the Ethicon – Endosurgery Clinic Expert Panel and is a faculty member for LAP-BAND® proctorship of new surgeons. Dr. Cywes is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Surgery. His professional memberships include the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA), the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the ASMBS Pediatric Committee.

Dr. Cywes attended medical school at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, and completed his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in South Africa where he focused on plastic and reconstructive surgery. He completed residencies at Groote Schuur Hospital (anesthesiology and general surgery) and Nationwide Children’s Hospital (pediatric burns and general surgery), which is home to the Department of Pediatrics for the Ohio State University School of Medicine, formerly known as Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cywes also completed a residency program with the University of Toronto Gallie Surgical Scientist Program at Toronto General Hospital.

After completing fellowships in Neonatal/Pediatric Intensive Care at the Hospital for Sick Children in Canada and in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Dr. Cywes went on to Vanderbilt University as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric and Fetal Surgery. He later became a faculty member in the department of Pediatric Surgery for Pediatric and Neonatal Minimally Invasive Surgery at Nemours Children’s Clinic and Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Cywes is also the recipient of national and international honors and awards, and has been a contributor to numerous books and papers.

Dr. Cywes has been practicing medicine since 1988. Today, he continues to participate in clinical research, recently working with the Food and Drug Administration on the safety and efficacy of a weight-loss balloon (Obalon Inc.) and with the Dual Center on prospective comparisons of LAP-BAND® versus the Imbricated Lap Band (iLap).

Dr. Cywes is currently on-staff at both St. Mary’s Medical Center and Palm Beach Children’s Hospital located in West Palm Beach, Florida.
