Laura Rathe Fine Art Announces Matt Devine & Mel DeWees: "Outlined"
Contemporary Dallas Gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art Announces Fall Exhibition Debut Featuring Acclaimed Modern Sculptor & Renowned Abstract Painter.
Dallas, TX, August 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- For the 2013 Fall art season premiere, Dallas’s Laura Rathe Fine Art announces the debut duo exhibition "Outlined" featuring the latest series of works by renown sculptor, Matt Devine, and contemporary mixed- media painter, Mel DeWees, in an opening reception on Saturday, September 7th from 6-9pm.
As dynamic and conceptual artists, Devine and DeWees explore the element of form with bold, linear compositions that convey and express a sense of overall balance and universal harmony. Paired together, the “Outlined” collection is displayed as a striking and spontaneous visual diary to viewers. This exhibition is on display through October 5, 2013.
About the Artists
Matt Devine is an exceptional metal sculptor and self-taught artist. Devine began honing his metal fabrication skills in 1995 and transitioned to full-time sculpting in 2001. His non-representational sculptures are known for their clean and harmonizing aesthetic, which often seem to defy gravity. Devine’s artwork is seamless and evokes weightlessness, yet is fabricated using heavy metals such as steel, aluminum and bronze.
Devine’s sculpture is currently on display at highly regarded fine art galleries across the country. His creations can be found in private American collections in locations ranging from Los Angeles to New York and international collections on five continents. Devine has expanded his scope to include design and fabrication of large-scale public works on display in prominent urban settings. Devine works and resides in Southern California.
Since early childhood, Mel DeWees has seen art as an escape and the essence of his being. At an early age, he faced hardship and emotional struggles in coping with the loss of his parents, and as he aged, art allowed him to establish a presence and find his voice.
Born and raised in Bryan, Texas, DeWees’s childhood artistic inspirations led him to attend Cooper Union School of Art in New York, followed by advanced studies at Glassell School of Art through the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. Initially working with techniques from masters of classical figurative art, DeWees began his arts education by drawing and painting representationally. It was not until he attended college that he began his series of bold, abstract and non- representational artworks.
“After numerous figure study classes, I found that drawing was pivotal for me as an artist to obtain my own sense of reason. The LINE became my visual voice. My paintings tend to have light backgrounds to encourage an association with sketchbooks. This treatment of the painting as a sketch allows the line to serve as a focal point within the work.”
DeWees resides in Houston, Texas, and his work is held in numerous private and public collections nationwide.
