The Community Unitarian Church at White Plains Welcomes Rev. Meredith Garmon as Its New Minister Preached His First Sermon

White Plains, NY, August 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- In May, following a two-year interim ministry and a year–long search process, the Community Unitarian Church of White Plains congregation overwhelmingly voted to call Rev. Dr. Meredith Garmon as its next settled minister.

On Sunday, August 4, Rev. Meredith Garmon conducted his first service at CUC, and by all accounts fulfilled the expectations of CUC members for a dynamic and inspiring spiritual and community presence.

A life-long Unitarian Universalist, Rev. Garmon holds Masters’ degrees in communication studies and philosophy, and a PhD. in government from the University of Virginia. He completed his theological studies at the Meadville-Lombard Theological Seminary in 2003 and was ordained a UU minister in 2004. Since 2006 he has served as the minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Gainsville, Florida.

According to Reverend Garmon, "Unitarian Universalist congregations are places where people of different beliefs come together to worship as one faith. We can do that because, for us, religion isn't about belief. Religion is about how you live: the ethics and values that guide your life. Religion is about community: connecting with others. And religion is about experiences of transcendence and wonder. It's a path of spiritual deepening, and that's what I'm here to facilitate."

Rev. Garmon will be regularly in the pulpit, including the more informal summer Sundays August 21 and August 28. Sunday services are at 10:15. Childcare is available for all services. Sunday school begins on September 8, at 10:00 a.m. CUC embraces all, without distinction of race, class, gender, sexual orientation or creed, and visitors are always welcome.

Randy Marshall of the CUC Board of Trustees stated, “The CUC congregation is thrilled to have Meredith join us as settled minister. He promises to bring new energy and leadership as we move forward in our mission to bring spiritual growth to our community and make an impact for social justice in Westchester and beyond.”

Community Unitarian Church at White Plains (“CUC”), located at 468 Rosedale Ave. White Plains, N.Y., has been an engaged and vibrant part of the Westchester religious community since its founding in 1909.
